Transport Update – April
Clarke Street reopens
Clarke Street has reopened following work to resurface and repave the road, and to improve the pedestrian walkway. The Metalworks building has also completed, opening up new routes through the area, creating a pleasant car-free route through from Phillip Street to Bedminster Green and Windmill Hill.
This route takes in the rear entrance to Windmill Hill City Farm and reveals the historic ‘penstock’ lock gate of the River Malago, which will be restored as part of works taking place in summer 2026.
Upcoming changes to East Street
Bristol City Council officers have been visiting businesses on East Street recently to talk about upcoming changes to how traffic restrictions are enforced.
The section of East Street between Cannon Street and Dalby Avenue is currently restricted to private vehicles between 7am and 7pm.
While most drivers use other routes, including the reopened A38, some vehicles have been ignoring the restrictions and there have been collisions on East Street.
To protect all road users, and create a more pleasant environment on East Street, we are proposing to install an Automatic Number Plate Registration (ANPR) camera at the Cannon Street bus gate.
East Street businesses are being asked to provide their loading requirements so these can be factored into the design of the scheme.
Businesses have until Friday 25 April to complete the survey.
Stafford Street reopens to road traffic
Dandara Living has completed its works to improve the roads that surround the Stafford Yard development.
Stafford Street is now one-way southbound, while Leicester Street and Little Paradise remain two-way.
As part of the Stafford Yard development, Dandara Living has extended Leicester Street, and opened it to pedestrians and vehicles, joining Little Paradise to Mill Lane.
The works include additional cycling infrastructure on Stafford Street, which will connect to the Malago Greenway and on to the city centre.
A new bus stop has been installed in front of the building to service buses travelling along the A38 towards Bristol Temple Meads and the city centre.
Dandara is in the final stages of development and the building is on track to be completed in April with new residents moving into the 295 new homes soon after.
