Bedminster Green student accommodation update
Plot 3 in Bedminster Green is being developed by Watkin Jones for the University of Bristol. The new accommodation block, Metal Works, will be managed by Fresh Student Living and home to 819 students from September this year.
The University of Bristol has produced a Civic University Agreement as part of a national and international movement for higher education institutions to better connect with, and be a positive benefit to, their cities and regions. You can read more about this agreement here: Working Together for Bristol: Our Civic University Agreement, 2023 to 2030.
Partnering with the University of Bristol will bring many benefits to the local area, including the possibility of access to free dental care as the University’s student dentist training includes treating volunteer patients. Treatment is available at a new site on Avon Street (near Temple Meads) and provided under the supervision of appropriately qualified staff.
Another benefit is free legal advice delivered by the University of Bristol Law Clinic. The work is carried out by law students who work under the supervision of qualified solicitors, to help clients with a range of legal issues. They can assist in areas such as housing, employment, and welfare benefits. Residents of Bedminster can access this service by making an enquiry online (which will re-open in September 2024) or at the fortnightly drop-in law clinic at Wellspring Settlement in Barton Hill.
In addition to these services, the partnership also offers a range of opportunities for schools and young people. These include getting a taste of what it’s like to study at the university, finding work experience, attending educational events and workshops, and using the university’s resources for teachers and schools.
The partnership also provides opportunities for non-profit organisations to work with the university. Non-profits can partner with the university on research, find skilled students and experts to enhance their projects, and hire meeting and event spaces.
You can contact the university if you have questions about their activity with communities in South Bristol here.
