Malago Road re-opening to two-way traffic
Malago Road and Dalby Avenue will re-open to two-way traffic three weeks earlier than planned, on Friday 9 August.
Dalby Avenue and Malago Road are being transformed to make it easier for residents to walk/wheel, cycle, and use public transport in South Bristol. Although the road is re-opening to two-way traffic early, construction work is due to complete on schedule at the end of August.
As a part of the Bedminster Green Highways Improvement works there will be a new continuous inbound bus lane along Malago Road and Dalby Avenue, new and improved bus stops, upgraded and additional pedestrian and cycle crossings, new and improved cycle lanes on Whitehouse Lane, and resurfaced roads and pavements.
New street trees will be planted in verges between the updated wider pavements, and sustainable drainage is now in place to help rainwater runoff from overwhelming the sewer systems and to irrigate the planted areas.
The trees and general planting are yet to be completed as trees cannot be planted in any other season except the winter. As other plants are placed around many of the trees, the low-level plants will also be planted in winter to save them being damaged during the tree planting.
Extensive work has been undertaken to realign Dalby Avenue and Malago Road, improve Sheene Road junction and this involved moving underground pipes and utilities while also allowing one-way traffic on those roads. The Bedminster district heat network pipes have also been installed providing new developments in the area with low carbon energy.
Along with the Malago Road re-opening, from Friday 9 August Whitehouse Lane and Hereford Street will be one way only. The route will flow from Malago Road to Hereford Street towards Whitehouse Lane, with the one-way route ending at Philip Street.
